Friday Five: Q&A with psychological thriller novelist Nicky Shearsby

Nicky Shearsby, author of Darkridge Hollow and other psychological thrillers

Continuing this blog’s celebration of women writers throughout Women’s History Month, I’m thrilled to introduce readers to Nicky Shearsby, an author of dark psychological horror thrillers. Nicky is active on X (@Nickyshearsby22), where she frequently engages with other writers and shares encouragement and wisdom. Her latest novel, Darkridge Hollow, is available now in ebook (Kindle) and hardback formats, with the paperback version coming out May 28 but available for pre-order. Born in England, she spent two decades running graphic design, magazine publishing, and skin care manufacturing businesses before pursuing the writing life in earnest after early retirement in 2020.

  1. What inspired you to get into writing fiction?

From a young age, I always knew that one day, when I retired and had more time, I would write novels.

  1. On your website, you mention that your fiction focuses on the “damaged mind.” How would you describe this type of writing?

Emotional storytelling is key to my style. I want readers to see a character and understand their deep-rooted suffering through inner dialogue and harrowing backgrounds. Because of this, I write in first person, allowing the reader to get inside the minds of the damaged.

  1. Where do you find your inspiration?

The human mind fascinates me. I look for inspiration from those we don’t see in life that often. Those suffering from undocumented mental health issues, including schizophrenia etc., ultimately guiding their poor choices and actions.

  1. Tell us a bit about your latest novel, Darkridge Hollow.

Darkridge Hollow is a dark atmospheric thriller set in a tiny forgotten town in Midwest America. From the first page, the reader is drawn into a web of uncertainty as the main character, Josh, tries to uncover the secrets buried there for over 30 years. With his daughter disappearing and his own mental health called into question, the reader is challenged as to what they believe is real right up until the climactic end. Darkridge Hollow is a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat roller coaster ride of hell that will have you up all night wondering what is around the corner.

  1. What advice would you offer anyone interested in writing fiction?

Do it. You’re not going to finish a book unless you write it. It doesn’t matter how good your writing is, because writing constantly develops your skills as a writer. It is the journey that is the most important and the ultimate end goal of satisfaction.
