Pulling the plug on a personal blog

Yesterday, I announced the death of my first weblog — bloggedy blog — thus ending an experiment in personal blogging that began in March 2002.

I began that site during a time when I was studying and writing about the impact of new media on spiritual formation, or words to that effect, and I wanted to immerse myself into the then-nascent blogging subculture. In particular, I wanted to discover how people were using blogging to connect on a spiritual plane.

But when I came to a fork in the road and discovered some fascinating music and pop culture blogs, I followed that path and sort of gave up on the topic of spiritual formation. (It was an easy choice, actually. Many of the “spiritual” blogs I discovered were more concerned with politics and religious hair-splitting than spiritual formation, and many of them seemed more interested in contentious either/or debate than any serious discussion about issues. The music bloggers, on the other hand, were a friendlier bunch, swapping music files and sharing new finds with an eager audience. Not that we didn’t debate important issues vehemently, but it was all done in a good spirit, and to my knowledge, no music blogger ever condemned another to hell for, say, preferring Van Hagar to the original Van Halen.)

From there, I learned a bit about podcasting, I started another blog (this one) and then another, and discovered more forks in the blogging road. I’ve decided it’s time to focus my blogging on more vocational matters, like those discussed on this blog. So the bulk of my blogging from here on out will be here (and on the two UMR blogs where I contribute: Visions and Name Change Conversations.) But from time to time I’ll start to miss the more personal aspects of blogging, and then I’ll post the occasional random 10 tunes or other personal musing on this blog. To me, the occasional personal post — that peek into some facet of a blogger’s existence beyond the usual subjects — makes reading blogs all the more enjoyable.

To quote the great Yogi Berra: “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” That’s exactly what I’m doing. We’ll see how it goes.

You know you’re too busy when…

…you don’t have time to fill out your NCAA tournament brackets (men’s or women’s).

This is the first year in forever that I haven’t completed my brackets. And I turn on ESPN last night to discover that the first game of the men’s tournament was already under way. So I’ll just cut to the chase and give you my final fours:

Final Four – Men’s
Wisconsin
UCLA
Georgetown
Ohio State

Final Four – Women’s
Purdue
Tennessee
Stanford
Duke
