Friday Five: opportunity knocking

Reprising a former practice as we head into the weekend.

In this blog’s previous life as a resource for higher education marketers and communicators, I would occasionally post a feature on Friday called Friday Five. It usually consisted of a collection of links on a specific topic, or occasionally five-part Q&As with writers, other bloggers, and other people influential in the marketing/PR/communication world. Anyway, I thought I might reprise this idea with a focus on the craft of writing. Consider this the maiden voyage of the new Friday Five.

Opportunities for writers

Are you looking for opportunities to showcase your writing? The internet is teeming with them. Here are five.

  1. New Millennium Writings is accepting submissions for its New Millennium Writing Awards — four awards of $1,000, one each for a single poem, a short story, a work of flash fiction, and a work of creative nonfiction. Winners will also be published in New Millennium Writings in print and online. There’s a $20 entry fee, and the deadline to submit is January 31.
  2. For writers of creative non-fiction, Hippocampus Magazine recently announced plans for a new flash CNF competition. Subscribers to the mag’s email list will get first peek at the details. If you’re not on their email list, you can fix that right now.
  3. While we’re on the subject of flash writing, you should know that Paragraph Planet is always accepting submissions of 75-word flash fiction stories. The title plus the one-paragraph story must equal 75 words — no more, no less.
  4. For those of you who use Medium, there’s a new ezine called Word Garden that is looking for contributors. The guy behind the effort, Carl Jeffers, is looking for stories of 1,000 words or fewer, primarily on the topics of writing and building a personal brand.
  5. The Kenyon Review‘s annual short fiction contest is now open for entries through January 31. There is a $24 entry fee, but it gets you a half-year subscription to both the print and digital version of the review.

Happy writing!
