‘We Didn’t Start the Viral’

A brilliant music video homage to viral videos, by way of the Marketing and Strategy Innovation Blog, which discusses how many of the successful virals came from the corporate world. That may be true, but could Burger King have come up with the Star Wars Kid?

I love these kinds of mashups. Videos like these, and the virals that spawn them, are part of what makes the Internet so much fun.

A formula for successful online video

At last, someone (TubeMogul) has come up with a formula for success in online video marketing. And it looks like this:

.5C + .15M + .20T + .15P = Success.

Mashable breaks down what it means:

50% C = Content and Production. You need substance.

15% M = Metadata. If you don’t fill out as many relevant tags as you can, you’re shooting yourself in the foot.

20% T = Thumbnail. It’s your free advertisement to the world. If you can pick your thumbnail, pick a good one.

15% P = Promotion. If you have a Facebook network, a bunch of twitter friends, and a blog to post on, you should do it. The video won’t discover itself.

So there you have it.
